were self-righteous (Zeph. 1:12). Sometimes a stirring call is suddenly shouted, but, at other times, the plea is gentler. Always the intention is to bring the people back to the ways of God. Throughout his little book, Haggai constantly called the people to ‘give careful thought’ to their ways (Hag. 1:5, 7; 2:15, 18).
